Tumwater 50, Black Hills 47
In what is probably not an upset, Tumwater handed Black Hills their first league loss and their second loss on the season. Elma however, couldn't take advantage as River Ridge took them down as the top of the Girls 2A Evergreen league bunches up with three teams with two losses.
Skyview 40 Heritage 38
Part one of the battle for the 4A Girls Greater St. Helens League battle saw Skyview on the upside of Heritage. The two horse race will resume on February 12th at Skyview.
Boys Basketball
Onalaska 60, Rainier 57
Onalaska took on Rainier in its own gym, this time with sharpshooter Jacob Fox in the line-up. The result was only slightly closer than the 61-56 win at Onalaska last weekend without Fox. Onalaska is now 11-0 on the season and hosts Winlock on Tuesday, February 3rd.
Pe Ell 58 Napavine 52
I don't know what to think of Napavine these days. Like much of the mix of Boy's 2B top teams including the Tigers, Toutle Lake, Mossyrock and Adna, nobody wants to take charge of the league.
Stevenson 56 Kalama 46
Stevenson has now defeated the what I thought were the top two teams in the 1A Boys Trico League. In addition to Kalama, the Bulldogs smoked Castle Rock a couple of weeks ago and now are in charge of the league but will visit both Castle Rock and Ilwaco next week and Kalama on February 13th.

Games That Have Meaning in March
Of all of Tuesday’s games that matter the most, Tumwater’s upset of River Ridge is probably tops. Tumwater came storming out of a lethargic River Ridge and maintained a 25 point lead at halftime. Tumwater had four players in double figures including Daniel Devries with 20.

River Ridge Continues a Long-Term Run
I may have missed the emergence of the Lady Spartans at Forks and the gals at Ilwaco, but who could have missed the River Ridge boys with all of their weapons? I will give credit to Centralia, they played tough and while I expected them to be hit by a truck, it was more like VW bug.
The Tacoma News Tribune had Centralia ranked 6th earlier this week but two consecutive losses to the bottom and top teams of the Evergreen League will end their top 10 experience. They are a top 30 team at the 2A level and will cause problems for many teams hoping to upset their way into post season play.
River Ridge is for real. Ranked 4th this week and given credit for a win against another top 10 team, they have a good chance to jump a notch ot two. Younase Dunn scored 25 points and Tyler Nelson added 24 against the Tigers but more importantly, the Hawks employ pressure defense, and up-tempo offense and a bevy of accurate shooters.
The Hawks are 9-3 on the season and the only blemishes on their record were installed by 3A Prairie of the Greater St. Helens during the first game of the season. The other losses may be forgivable. The first is to 4A Central Kitsap who is 9-3 themselves and league rival Hoquiam who is also in the 2A top 10.
River is no stranger to the state tournament. They placed 3rd in 2007 and suffered an overtime loss in the 2nd round last year.

Victories of Note
Prairie 54 Union 28
In what looked like a 1-2 match-up in the 3A Girl's Greater St. Helens Conference, the Prairie Girls dispatched what appears to be their closest competition with a 26 point drubbing.
Napavine 59 Pe Ell 38
The Napavine girls just keep on winning! They are 8-0 and 6-0 in the tough Central 2B League.
Kalama 69 Ilwaco 56
Robby Sanders continued his torrid ways with a 22 point effort Tuesday night as Kalama took another step towards the Trico League lead. Mark Pollock scored 24 and while Brandon Walker had 8 assists with 12 points from the point position. Kalama continues to impress.
Stevenson 68 Castle Rock 47
Stevenson made the most of a home game and dealt a serious blow to Castle Rock. Stevenson and Ilwaco are now the ones to watch for 2nd in the Boy's Trico.
Toledo 80 Rochester 34
Toledo is now 8-1 and what is more surprising is that Tiffany Tornow put up her usual numbers but Candi Zion scored just 6 points. Several unheralded names like Brittany Hope, and Lia Lucas put up double digits.
La Center 57 White Salmon 25
The La Center girls have just quietly won. That now sets up a great match-up with Castle Rock on Friday.

In my continuing crusade that says you can’t rank them without watching them in person. My economic stimulus plan would have more prep reporters in the stands actually watching games.
This goes under the heading of "the experts know nothing". Centralia, unbeaten and ranked 5th in the state were taken to the woodshed by 2-6 Black Hills. The Tacoma News Tribune had Centralia ranked 5th this week, but a pair of eyes would reveal that Centralia's unbeaten streak was the result of little competition not superior play and talent by the Tigers. In a pre-season jamboree, 1A Winlock put 27-14 licking on them in a quarter of play. Now, how does that match-up with 9th ranked River Ridge look on Friday?

The Latest News Tribune Rankings
Now I am not real big on rankings where you can't personally see the teams in some form, but the season it is getting to the point where there might be some legitimacy using some comparisons. The Tacoma News Tribune is out with its latest rankings and District IV is well represented, especially at the 2A level.
3A
Columbia River is the lone representative of District IV at the 3A level ranked 5th. This level is dominated by District 2 with Rainier Beach, Franklin and Bellevue retaining the top three spots.
2A
Mark Morris with its two losses is ranked 2nd while River Ridge is 4th. Still unbeaten Centralia (When I saw Centralia I was not impressed and don’t believe they have played a difficult enough schedule to warrant this ranking) is close behind in 6th and will have a headline game against River Ridge on Friday. Hoquiam lost to Yelm this week dropped all the way to 9th. Be sure to give your thought s one of this weeks polls!

Winlock didn’t even play a game last week but moved up two slots to 4th . District 3 dominates the rankings at this levels with Vashon Island ranked #1 ahead of Port Townsend in 2nd.
We will give updates when the rest of the rankings are made public.
