Short-Handed Napavine Clips Toledo

Napavine's Stephanee Stedham slams the ball down on Toledo on Monday evening.

While missing three of its starting players, A Napavine volleyball team with three freshemen seeing a lot of action fought, scratched and clawed to a hard fought 22-25, 25-19, 28-26, 18-25, 15-9 victory over neighboring Toledo in a non-league match Monday evening.

Toledo's Vanessa Reich had power and cleverness, but at times was innaccurate with her "kills".

"There were moments when there was a spark tonight" said Tiger Coach Monica Daily who has been waiting for full development of her team.

Sophomore McKenna Hoyt contributed 10 kills and six blocks for the Tigers while Aimee Gerard had five blocks, three kills and perfect serving.

For Toledo, Holly Durham totaled 20 assists while Vanessa Reich added 10 kills and 15assists. Haylee Ashley had four blocks and three kills.

Stephanie Styger of Napavine hits the floor to defend a "kill" by Toledo.

United Blanks Rock-On

In a game with only 13 shots on goal, it was Toledo-Winlock United that placed two attempts into the net. Actually one in the net and one just far enough.

Rock-On's Lacey Morris (5) and Samantha May (8) are challenged by a United player.

"We lost a couple of games to good teams in Seattle and then beat Steilcoom, a good 2A team. Those kind of things get us prepared for this game", said United Head Coach
Horst Malunat.

It was Tiffany Tornow that scored first for United in the 19th minute and then they began to play near lock-down defense, not allowing the combined team from Napavine and Onalaska to get much in the way of direct shots on United Keeper Lea Lucas.

United's Tyran Boone (#3) and Rock-Ons Elaun Sherwood chase after a loose ball.

After the break Freshman Mercy Crocker scored a goal that was closer to not in the 59th minute. The Rock-On keeper nearly had it stopped, but it slipped through her hands and arms and had just enough momentum to enter the goal.

"Mercy Crocker had a breakout 2nd half" said her coach.

Late in the 2nd half, United's defense stepped another notch until subs made their way in the game late.

"My defense is coming together" said Malunat. "Overall, we are really coming along. Even from 1st half to 2nd half we saw some growth and that is all I can ask for."

Rock-On's Rachel LaBrasca can't get the ball past United Goalkeeper Lia Lucas.

Distinctions are important as Rock-On pays a visit to United later in the season and Malnaut was proud of his team for this win, but wouldn't place any bets on the next meeting.

"It's league, its on the road, it's kind of a rivalery. It's always close and it is always competitive".

Castle Rock Young, but Certianly the Real Deal

Castle Rock quickly disposed of Toledo Wednesday night 25-3, 25-16 and 25-9, but the question had to be asked of Castle Rock Head Coach Jeana Bayes, what is the potential of your team on the big stage?

Castle Rock's Taryn Paget plays the ball as Elie Halladay (13) and Macee Utecht (3) look on during a non-league match against Toledo on Wednesday

"We have three phenomonal freshman Team (Captain Maddi Seidl, Tierney Uhlenkott and Macee Utecht) that added to our team that have played together since 4th grade. They are almost running my team now"

"We feel like we are about 95% from where we were last year." Of course last fall, the Rockets suffered their only loss in the State Championship final. Any coach would enjoy near 100% of that.

"We had three very very strong seniors that are gone but the three freshmen play the exact positions that were vacated." The transition Bayes insists has been nearly seamless.

Toledo's Holly Durham (left) and Kimberly Knight (right) ready themselves for a Castle Rock serve. The Rocket's serving impressed Toledo Coach Mandi Olsen

It was the play of Toledo's Vannessa Reich that kept Toledo in the 2nd game as the Lady Indians initially took a 9-4 early lead. She had eight kills while Hailey Ashley added six blocks through the match.

The Lady Rocket bench was deep and mobile as all the players had a chance to see action. That was the reason Bayes admitted, Toledo had a little run early in game 2.

"In order to have a really strong program, you have to play from number 24 on up to number 1." It is a formula that has Bayes in the enviable position of being one of the top programs in the state, yet a year or two away from its best team.

The Trico is going to have a difficult time competing with Castle Rock, and Bayes insisted that their best competition came from larger schools over the summer.

District 4 Teams Ranked in the TNT Top 10

The newest Tacoma News-Tribune Prep rankings are out for week three!

At the 4A level, Southwest Washington does not have any teams ranked.

In the 3A competition, Union (2nd) and Camas (9th) are still proving their worth. Union defeated Evergeen 45-23 while Camas survived a scare from Battle Ground.

Southwest Washington was well represented at the 2A level last week, but an elimination match between Mark Morris and Centralia sent the Tigers into the "also ran" territory where they now join Tumwater. W.F. West had a big win over 4A Heritage and now is the top ranked team in District 4 and 8th in the state. They are followed by Mark Morris and R.A. Long who blanked larger Hudson's Bay 20-0.

What was billed as a dream match-up between two of Southwest Washington's best 1A teams turned into a laugher as Montesano holds court over the rest of the state. East of the Cascades there are many disbelivers and many are counting the days until a potential match-up between Royal and the Bulldogs. Castle Rock fell out of the Top 10 and Kalama did't help itself much with a nailbiting victory over 2A Washougal.

AT the 2B level, the machine that is Napavine is ranked 2nd while Naselle is 4th again. Only a loss or a meeting on the field will push any movement into this group.

Castle Rock Website

As someone that follows six local schools very closely, I am always pleased when the programs produce more information than that available on the Friday night program and beyond the various cookie-cutter sports sites. The Castle Rock Football program and others have a tradition of hosting a website dedicated to the teams' experiences complete with coaches comments and thoughts.

Thanks CR for the additional information and insight.

Cross Country Coverage

2B Northwest Christian of Lacey competes well at any level with their core of harrier runners. W.F. West continues an awesome tradition of runners and both performed well at the Capital Invitational. Most of the Evergreen 2A programs as well as 1A Rainier ran in the meet that featured a race for each grade level. There is also an article in the Olympian.

Several 1A and 2B Schools participated in the Ocosta Invitational. Onalaska's Frank Krause won the boy's competition while a familiar name in the Cascade foothills (Mikel Elliot of White Pass) won the girls race.

Steilacoom Comes to Hoquiam

If there is much defense to be played this Friday night, expect it to be played by the weather. Last year Steilacoom and Hoquiam lit up the scoreboard and both coaches expect the same this year.

Steilacoom's running game may be the difference in who wins and loses and will the Grizzlies be able to slow Sentinels down at all? One of the questions is how well has Steilacoom retooled? They return only four offensive starters from a club that went 10-0 during the regular season but was defeated by Burlington-Edison in the opening round of the state 2A playoffs.

Aberdeen Hosts Washougal Friday

Washougal will bring an entire new offense to Aberdeen and try it out in hostal and potentially rainy territory. The Panthers will try to spread the ball and take advantage of their speed.

In the meantime, the Bobcats are concerned about the play of their defense and their abilities to protect their quarterback. The main goal is to prevent turnovers on opening night.

For more information and details click here.

Elma and Montesano Set for Annual Battle

It is always fun to look forward to traditional rivalries. Just 10 miles apart, a 1A power and a solid 2A participant will go at it this Friday and it has the makings of a potential great game.

It should be a tough physical game where a turnover here or there could determine the outcome of the entire game.

Montesano, the smaller 1A school has won the last three contests and bring both size and speed as well as a solid system. Prior to the Bulldog's hot streak, Elem had won eight straight over their western neighbor.

The Eagles certainly know they face a great team and rival, but their focus is on the rest of the season as they face tough competition every week in the Evergreen Conference.

Montesano’s captains for the season are Ryan Campbell, Kurt Fry, Kale Trimble and Parker Waber.

For Elma, its captains for the season are Garrett Stoney, Cody Taylor, Tyson Sutten, Mike Bowe and Ford Davis.

For more details on this game, see this article in the Daily World of Aberdeen.

Area High Schools Enter the Field of Play this Week

The Toledo Cheer Squad pulls out the tradional banner during a football game in 2008.

With the beginning of school, also starts a season where coaches start sorting out the damage done by graduation on the field of play. While the first football games started last Friday, Volleyball, Soccer and Cross Country all start this week and next in our local high schools.

While Napavine dominated the local sports scene with powerful football (state champions), basketball and baseball (3rd place in state) teams, it looks like an exciting year for Onalaska with many exciting athletes returning to all sports.

The Napavine Football team is well positioned to make another run at state under the leadership of Head Coach Josh Fey.

In football, the Tigers won the 2B state championship in 2008 with a unit that developed as a smooth, effective operation through the season. They replace a few athletes, but return most of their skill players. Onalaska has perhaps the most exciting athlete in the area in Dalton Richey. With a couple of receivers developing, Onalaska could dominate the local 1A scene. Winlock takes on a dark-horse status after a two-win season with a young team barely affected by graduation and a couple of new athletes added to the campus. Toledo returns one of the best passers in the person of Andrew Blair, to grace area football fields in recent history. Expect the Indians to play total team ball and compete for a spot to state. Toutle Lake may be in a rebuilding year after graduating many great athletes, but expect Castle Rock to field a solid team despite the loss the great Zach Gehring and Kyle Karnofski among many others.

Onalaska Volleyball Coach Susan Gordon has a bevy of returning talent in the Lady Logger athletic program.

The Lady Loggers look to compete very well with Toledo on the Volleyball court as both schools bring back athletes and coaches in very proud programs. Other volleyball programs to watch include 2008 State Runner-up Castle Rock. Even with the graduation of five seniors off the 2008 team, the pipeline of talent will continue.

Olanlaska takes pride in not only its ability to field a competetive team, but host large meets like this one last fall.

Onalaska Cross Country will also bring back huge numbers of harriers to compete at the district level.

Rock-On and Castle Rock split two classic battles in 2008. Rock-On went on to State, could 2009 be the year for a rapidly developing CR program?

Count on three very good soccer programs from Castle Rock, Rock-On (a combined group from Onalaska and Napavine) and Toledo-Winlock United to battle for local supremacy.

Yes, it is that time of year; Entire communities come out to support their local student-athletes on the field of play and old rivalries are renewed with a new generation of athletes and fans.
